Our last stop was Maasa Mara, the northern extension of the Serengeti Plain. While we were a little too early to see the great migration in full glory, we certainly did not lack for opportunities for wildlife viewing.
We
stayed at a lodge in the preserve
Once again, we needed mosquito netting
The
lodge was cozy
And
there were always critters, like the hyrax, wanting to come in to the rooms.
One night, one did!
We
got a unique perspective in a hot-air balloon ride
The animals spread out below us
The
horizon was far away
We
landed in Tanzania. A little bumpy!
Back
in Kenya, Captain Mike provided breakfast
The
weather was uncertain but dramatic
Lion
sightings were our most common recreation
Of
course, there were elephants as well
And
birds like the lilac-breasted roller
Trees
hid some larger animals, like giraffe
Hyenas
skulked on the plains
Zebras
formed herds
Ostrich
were usually seen in pairs
We
watched a cheetah hunt (but fail to catch) a baby wildebeest
The
topi liked to pose for the cameras
We
had breakfast by the Mara River the last day
Crocodiles
were a common sight on the river
Hippos
were also often seen
The saddlebilled stork made an impressive show | And then it was over. . . |
