The Beginning

After two long flights from California, and an overnight stopover in Amsterdam, we finally arrived in Nairobi on July 21.

There were 18 guests in our group, mostly from San Diego.  The trip had been arranged through the Zoological Society of San Diego and was run by Park East Tours.

The Zoological Society sent Bill Toone from the Center for the Reproduction of Endangered Species as our escort. His true love is birds, so he had a lonely time with a group full of hard-core mammal-lovers, but he managed.

Throughout the trip we were ably taken care of by our Park East Naturalist, David Ngure.  David is a native Kenyan, from the Kikuyu tribe, and could answer almost any question we could pose about the natural history, economics, or politics  of his country.

Our  driver-guides Freddie, Matthew, Mwololo [David], and Marcus were also informative about what we were seeing and were experts at navigating the rough roads and giving us the best views of wildlife.
We got our first look at the little safari vans that would become so familiar to us in the next two weeks.  Watch your heads!
