A VISIT TO SAN JUAN XOCONOSCO AND SAN FELIPE |
The next day we visited the
village of San Juan Xoconosco
While there are shops in the
village, much of the commerce is conducted in temporary outdoor
shops
We visited a women's cooperative
that makes baskets out of the needles of the fir trees, thus
preserving the trees themselves for the butterflies
The quality of the crafts was
excellent and we were all happy to contribute to this example of
sustainable economics
Dave modeled the latest in
basket headgear for us
Recently there has been an
attempt to create a larger market for these baskets through the
development of a catalog and, of course, suggestions of an
internet-based business
From the current world we took a
short visit to the past, stopping at one of the many pyramids in
Mexico
The pyramid is approached from
the rear, which made for an unusual first perspective on it
While not extremely high, the
steps were narrow
But still, some people climbed to
the top to hear Rodrigo's lecture on the pyramid
Others relied on the interpretive
signs in the area. . .
and enjoyed the views from the
base of the structure
