Marrakech

Roads in Morocco were always a challenge for the driver--especially when he got stuck behind trucks hauling goats around.

Our first evening in Marrakech we went to the Fantasia, a popular entertainment featuring representatives from various Moroccan tribes and an equestrian show.

Our tour of Marrakech began at the Koutobia Tower, one of the city landmarks.

We then continued on to the Royal Palace (or Bahia Palace).

The interior of the palace was opulent, with carved ceilings and painted doorways. As in all Muslim building, there were no human figures depicted. (The tourist is not part of the decor.)

Then we visited an herbalist shop where we learned about traditional remedies and had the chance to buy an herb that was said to cure snoring (Chuck!) and migraines (Pat!).

Recycling is necessary, given the limited resources. This shop specialized in turning old tires into useful products like frames and mirrors.

The most famous place in Marrakech is probably Jemaa El Fna Square, the location for several movies. Now it is a favorite tourist destination.

People-watching at Jemaa El Fna Square was varied, to say the least.

One of the big attractions was the snake charmer. Needless to say, Chuck took this picture! The charmers would put the snakes on you, but even Chuck did not go that far.

There were less threatening things to see, including lots of souvenir shops.
