We next flew to Cairns, mostly to see the Great Barrier Reef. We had heard that they were not going out to the reef due to a cyclone. But the day we were there they went out. Then the next day they did not go out again as the cyclone turned around and came back. BOY did we feel lucky!
The ship we took to the company owned an artificial island--really a platform anchored next to the reef. | The platform included places to sit, food, snorkeling and diving equipment, showers, and anything else you might need for a day at the Reef. |
The semi-submersible we each took (Pat twice!), which left every 20 minutes or so from the platform. | Snorkeling - only Pat went since Chuck does not swim. Because of the cyclone the water was not very clear, but Pat did get kissed by a large fish. |
We saw the reef via an underwater viewing area and the semi-subs. | It was something else! As with Ayres, enjoy! |
The next day, we went on a trip to the area around Cairns, including an aboriginal village and a trip up the mountain. This turtle was here to greet us at the village. After an EXCELLENT show presenting the beliefs and history of the Tjapukai tribe , we went to the Cultural Village. | Yes, that's the old didgeridoo. |
We watched several native dance troupes perform. | Then we took a skyrail. Despite Chuck's fear of heights, it was a great experience. |
There were stops along the Skyfari for closer looks at waterfalls (abundant) and local flora. Quite a contrast to the dry red dust of Ayres Rock!
Then we took a train ride back down the mountain. |
