A Trip to Panama and Costa Rica
Overland to Arenal Volcano
As we left the ship we headed overland for the Arenal Volcano. On the way we passed though cloud forest and returned to rainforest.
In addition to the active volcano, there are hot springs at Arenal that draw visitors from all over. The spa was so lush that it was difficult to see more than the next walkway.
During a walk outside the spa we looked for birds (and looked out for speeding cars) and found this trogon on a wire. After our hike, Pat relaxed at the cabin for the evening. Alas, clouds prevented us from seeing the volcano.
Leaving Arenal, our guide Umberto stopped to look for poison frogs. He found one: the poison arrow frog, also called the "blue jeans" frog.
At lunch the hotel set out fruit and attracted this honeycreeper. The restaurant was next to a river with a swinging bridge.
White-water rafting was a popular local sport. On the way out we stopped to admire a golden orb spider.
