Toledo

Our first stop on the trip was Toledo, which had many of the elements that we would see in other cities: homes with elaborate ironwork balconies, narrow streets, and lots of churches.

Toledo Cathedral has an imposing spire visible from much of the city.

While the facade was beautiful, the church was closed and we were not able to go inside.

Like many other cathedrals, it is decorated with elaborate sculptures covering nearly every square foot of the exterior.

The Toledo Town Hall was across from the Cathedral.

The Tagus River flows along the edge of Toledo. Here it is a fairly narrow river. Later we saw the delta at Lisbon.

Toledo is famous for its steel and for its Damascene filigree ware. We went to a factory to see the latter being made.

The finished products were complex and beautiful.
