Aguas Calientes

Aguas Calientes is the staging area for trips to Machu Picchu.   Like most towns in Peru, it is built around a central square flanked by churches and commercial buildings.
The town square is dominated by a statue of Pachacuatec.  It also has hotels that clearly cater to American tourists.
Several years ago there was a major landslide that killed a number of people and buried the train tracks just before the Aguas Calientes station. While work continues to clear and rebuild the line, visitors must walk along the tracks past the landslide to get to the town.
Our hotel in Aguas Calientes was in a lush beautiful setting with (of course) lots of steps.
