Fairbanks

Fairbanks

While in Fairbanks we took a cruise on the riverboat Discovery, which took us down the Chena River to visit sites representative of various cultures of Fairbanks.

The riverboat was enclosed--a blessing in the cool weather

Modern living with a twist--a woodfired hot tub

Planes are the major means of transportation

Planes come with floats, wheels, or skis, depending on the weather

We had a chance to see a village that recreates the way the indigenous Athabascans lived

A fish wheel--self-powered device for catching salmon

Salmon being dried in the traditional manner

The village

A traditional sod house

An elaborate winter coat

Maiden's dress

We also visited Susan Butcher's training camp for sled dogs. Butcher was the first women to win the Iditarod and had died only two weeks before our visit.

The dogs were harnessed for a run and were incredibly eager to go

As soon as they returned, they were ready to kick back and relax

Later that afternoon we visited an old gold dredge, now a museum.

We got to do some panning and found GOLD!
